The Old Dragon Mine

Dragon was a settlement that grew up near the Black Dragon gilsonite mine, approximately 1 mile from the Colorado state line. Althought the mine went into procuction in 1888, the town of Dragon didn't flourish until 1904 when the Uintah Railway laid tracks which connected it to Mack, Colorado. Because Dragon was a end-of-the-line town, it boomed for several years. When the town of Watson became the end-of-the-line town in 1911 and the mine was worked out by 1920, Dragon was on it's way to becoming a ghost town. Most of it's citizens moved to Watson, and later on to Bonanza.
